Metering and Guidelines
How it works
Facilities management at each institution will be responsible for measuring energy consumption through metering of individual buildings. Overall campus electricity use will be measured twice: first, during a "quiet metering" to get baseline numbers; second, during the actual competition. The two measurements will be compared, and the school that decreases energy consumption the most (measured by percent change) wins. All members of the campus community will be involved including, staff, faculty, and administration.
Each week of the four week competition, the results from each school will be announced. In addition, there may be similar intracampus challenges designed to motivate participants to conserve energy. Northfield Mount Hermon will hold competitions between faculty residences and between dorms.
Guidelines
- Each school is required to produce a student-written, directed, and edited video about energy conservation. This video will be shown at each institution to kick-off the competition.
- Lessons learned from years past have proven that students will go to extreme lengths to win a challenge. There will be NO sabotage of competing campuses. As with any competition, all participants are expected to behave maturely and appropriately.
- Each school and all participants must adhere to all codes: fire, safety, etc.
- Every member of each campus community will have opportunities to participate—staff/faculty (and their families),students, administration.
- The Green Cup Challenge committee encourages all participants to find ways of conserving energy that can be continued beyond the competition. Participants should attempt to change lifestyle behaviors that are reasonable to maintain and not resort to extreme tactics that are not sustainable on a daily basis.
